Luis Schachner is an artist and scientist whose work celebrates the intersection of art and science.
With a PhD in mass spectrometry and analytical chemistry, he brings a rigorous scientific mindset to his art, using the principles of simplicity and elegance to create work that is both intellectually stimulating and emotionally resonant.
Schachner discovered his inner artist through the process of playing with science, using it as inspiration to create something new and beautiful. He sees art as a playful exploration of the imagination, much like science is an exploration of the natural world.
In particular, Luis works with the molecular signatures recorded by mass spectrometry to decipher protein structure and create aesthetic experiences.
He has published scientific articles on the ‘biophysical meaning’ of the mass spectra he produces in fields spanning neuroscience, Epigenetics, and structural biology. He also shares his inner universe through the creation of Art using the mass spectra as digital media: malleable lines that provide a starting point for the unfolding of creativity.
Luis was born in Venezuela but has not returned to his home country since he emigrated to the US in 2012 . He graduated in Chemistry from Yale University with a vision for collaboration and exploration in the Sciences. He implemented that vision at Northwestern University during his PhD, where he began working at the interface of Science and Art and re-imagining his Scientific identity through mass spectrometry.
He became the inaugural Artist-in-Residence of the Chemistry of Life Processes Institute (Northwestern University) and of The Analytical Scientist Magazine.
Currently, Luis Schachner works as a scientist at Genentech, a pharmaceutical company in the Bay Area, CA. In his role, he analyzes the frequency of drug molecules.
Luis continues with his art practice, playing with new datatypes and pushing the boundaries of ‘data visualization’.
